How do I use awk to replace the first hyphen of a specific record?

It always good to provide your input and desired output.

try this..

To remove - if it is present at the start of the line.
Code:
awk '{ sub("^-","",$0)}1' file

To remove first instance of -

Code:
awk '{ sub("-","",$0)}1' file
