awk question

Hi experts,
I have a simple problem .I have a awk file which reads data from the text file, into a variable.There are some entries in the file which are duplicate.Is there a way in awk to eliminate the duplicate entries.

Code:
PLANNAME = substr($0,228,60)
 printf("\t Please keep this notice. It is part of your XYZ \n") > out_tmp1
  printf("\t  %s Evidence of Coverage.\n", PLANNAME) > out_tmp1

The sample output of plannames are :

Code:
1)EG EG GIC SRX - HMO Prime Rx
2)EG EG HMO Prime Rx

The sample output is :
Please keep this notice. It is part of your XYZ
     EG EG HMO Prime Rx Evidence of Coverage.

Kindly suggest.

 if (!a[substr($0,228,60)]++) {
  printf("\t Please keep this notice. It is part of your XYZ \n") > "out_tmp1"
  printf("\t  %s Evidence of Coverage.\n", PLANNAME) > "out_tmp1"
 }
}

        printf("\n") > out_tmp1
     }

why cant you do sort -u on file before supplying it to awk command?

I can't do that because the awk file is pretty huge and the entire report is generated in the awk file.I might need something in awk

so your input file name is not provided as argument to the awk script? if not it would be a quite a change to your big awk script....

yes the input file name is provided to the awk script as a parameter.
