getting a substring

Hi,

I have several lines like this ones:

123456789abcde /aa/bb/123456_$data.log
123456789abcde /aa/bb/123456_not_a_data_log
987654321ab /aa/bb/xpto123456_$data.log

...

How do I get into a variable the value "/aa/bb/123456_$data.log" , searching only for the beggining and ending patterns ("/aa/bb" and "_$data.log") ?

Thank you all for your help.

Best regards

Carlos

Maybe there's a better way, but this should work:

awk '{print $2}' testfile | grep "^/aa/bb" | grep "_\$data.log$"

If testfile is your file with that data.

Bash with an array

var=( $( cat file.txt |awk ' $2 ~ /\/aa\/bb.*\$data.log/ { print $2 } ' ))
echo ${var[@]}
echo ${var[1]}

Code:
awk 'match($0,"/aa/bb.*_\\$data.log"){print substr($0,RSTART,RLENGTH)}' foo.txt
