Regex for HP egrep
I seem to be having an issue with an egrep command and I think its the way it is interpreting my regex.

I have a test file..
Code:
###FIND THESE###
telnet
/telnet
`telnet -l`
###Dont FIND THESE###
donotfindtelnet
telnetdontfind

Working Regex on Linux/Solaris
Code:
egrep '\<(telnet|rcp)\>' $file

However...none of these work on HP-UX...what am i missing here?

also tried separating with \b to define word border, but HP and Solaris don't like that.

It seems that egrep on HP-UX is not accepting the beginning/end-of-word anchors through \< and \>. If you can use Perl, try:

perl -ne 'print if /\b(telnet|rcp)\b/' file

hmmm lol

-w works on Linux & HP...but not Solaris.

Geez maybe i will just use two commands.

How about

Code:
egrep '(^|[ \t])(telnet|rcp)($|[ \t])'

So there must either be space or beginning-of-line before, and space or end-of-line after.

Converting perl regex to sed regex

I am having trouble parsing rpm filenames in a shell script.. I found a snippet of perl code that will perform the task but I really don't have time to rewrite the entire script in perl.
