Need help in using "if ... then .else" code

Hi all,

I would like to get helped in using the "if .... then ...else " syntax in the script code.

In a file (named as file1) , say there are two columns . First column ( $1 ) is of unique number. Second column ( $2 ) are the corresponding values.

Unique Number Values
1 0.42
2 0.89
3 1.00
4 0.52
5 0.19
6 1.00

Now, i employed following code to get values between 0.50 and 1.00 (excluding 0.50 and 1.00).

Code:
awk '{if((1.0>$2)&&($2>0.50)){print$0;}}'  file1 > file2

By above code, my new file (file2) has following data:

Unique Number Values
2 0.89
4 0.52
Now, what I would like to do is to replace all the values which are less than 0.50 (in the second column) in the file1 as 0.50 (by default) and exclude the values of 1.00 in the file1 as usual.

I would like to achieve the following result through "if ... then ..... else ", where my data should look like :

Unique Number Values
1 0.50
2 0.89
4 0.52
5 0.50

Small modification to your original:

Code:
awk '
    $2 < 1.0 && $2 > .5 { print; next }
    $2 <= .5 { $2 = "0.50"; print; next }
'  file1 >file2

You can bang it together on one line, but I think this is easier to read and understand.

You can take advantage of the fact that awk automatically prints given a true expression to reduce the complexity:

Code:
awk '$2<0.5{$2="0.50"} $2<1.0' file1 > file2
