How to get name for a tar file from user

Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum.Infact this is my first post.So please bare with me Smilie.

I have made sh script that makes tar file with few files after they are modded. Now I have given a default name to the tar but I want the users to specify the name for the tar before the script makes the tar.

I know that I can get the name for it from user by using

Code:
read name_of_tar

But how do I use it in
Code:
tar -H ustar -c file1 file2 > name.tar

command???

And also I need to encrypt the script and found this: shttp://blabla.test.net/2007/12/how-to-protect-shell-script.html0 (remove "S" from beginning and 0 from the end of link to work) on How to protect a shell script posted by some user here after searching. But I see using shc.But a sticky here says csh is risky. Is shc and csh are both the same in any case???

Thanks for bearing with meSmilie

After using read name_of_tar to get the name of the tar file you want to create. You use it by changing
Code:
tar -H ustar -c file1 file2 > name.tar

to:
Code:
tar -H ustar -c file1 file2 > "$name_of_tar"

Note that if you blindly accept a filename from a user and don't verify the contents and appropriately quote uses of the user supplied string, you open your account with all sorts of security holes.

The purpose of shc is to obscure the text of the script that is in the shell script. That won't help anyone if you give anyone the root password or make the script writeable or executable by anyone other than root.

Welcome to the Unix.com forum.Smilie

Try something like this...

Code:
read name_of_tar
echo $name_of_tar #To Use that variable use $ ahead of it..

#Assuming you have urls only.

echo "shttp://unstableme.blogspot.in/2007/12/how-to-protect-shell-script.html0" | sed -e 's/shttp:/http:/1' -e 's/\.html0/\.html/g'

Thanks for the fast reply. There is no problem for me regarding security because this script will be with only 4 persons who are my reliable co-workers.So no problem on that.

I want to encrypt the script just to avoid any accident in case the script falls into somebody's hands SmilieSo you say shc can be used or I shouldnt?Sorry a little noob in this as this is my first time with scripting Smilie

Thanks for your reply but what is the use of second echo in the above code???I mean this:
Code:
echo "shttp://unstableme.blogspot.in/2007/12/how-to-protect-shell-script.html0" | sed -e 's/shttp:/http:/1' -e 's/\.html0/\.html/g'

You want to remove first "s" and last "0" that's why i have given this example.

I used echo to just show you..

You can use simply give the file name or give the input to sed by using "|"...

Code:
sed -e 's/shttp:/http:/1' -e 's/\.html0/\.html/g' file
