Hi all,

Thanks everybody who helped .

The mistake was the quotes were not used properly inside the awk command.

The following code worked fine:

for (i=0;i<=9;i=i+1)
 do
   awk'{if(('"$i"'*1000000<$1)&&($1<('"$i"'+1)*1000000)){print$0}}' values > $i
   cat headeronly $i > a$i
done

That's not how you're supposed to use variables inside awk... Did you try the code I suggested?
