  :
done < cat $TBL_HIST_LIST

Incidentally, the delete where clause can be simplified to:
Code:
where dt_last_upd_hist < sysdate - $days;

Ygor, I tried the loop, however it is not printing anything....I don't think it accesses the archiveHistTbl.list file
Here is the new code:
Code:
#For each table, delete based on dt_last_upd
while read $tbl days
do
   ${days=30}
   DELDATE=`shift_date.ksh $TODAY - ${days}`

#export full table
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/exp DBO_USER/DBO_PASS FILE=$DATADIR/$tbl-full.exp TABLES=${tbl}
#export table subset w/query
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/exp DBO_USER/DBO_PASS FILE=$DATADIR/$tbl-${DELDATE}.exp TABLES
=${tbl} QUERY=\"WHERE dt_last_upd \< to\_date\(\'$DELDATE\', \'DD-MON-YYYY\'\)\"
#truncate table
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus DBO_USER/DBO_PASS @db-dev TRUNCATE TABLE $tbl;

#import subset
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/imp DBO_USER/DBO_PASS FILE=$DATADIR/$tbl.exp FULL=YES IGNORE = YES
print tbl
done < cat ${TBL_HIST_LIST}
/
!
end
done

Code:
while read tbl days
do
   ................
   ................
   ................
done < "${TBL_HIST_LIST}"

run your script with '-x' option and see the trace.

Here is the whole script so you can get a good idea of what it does:

Code:
#!/bin/ksh -x

echo "start of new archive history.ksh"
TBL_HIST_LIST=${JOB_HOME}/archiveHistTbl.list
TBLLIST="${JOB_HOME}/archiveTbl.list"
DATADIR=/tmp
TODAY=`date +%Y%m%d`

# Set Path
PATH="${JOB_HOME}:$HOME/Dear/jobs/DEV/CHRIS:${PATH}"

#For each table, delete based on dt_last_upd_hist
while read $tbl days
do
   ${days=30}
   DELDATE=`shift_date.ksh $TODAY - ${days}`

#export full table
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/exp DBO_USER/DBO_PASS FILE=$DATADIR/$tbl-full.exp TABLES=${tbl}
#export table subset w/query
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/exp DBO_USER/DBO_PASS FILE=$DATADIR/$tbl-${DELDATE}.exp TABLES
=${tbl} QUERY=\"WHERE dt_last_upd \< to\_date\(\'$DELDATE\', \'DD-MON-YYYY\'\)\"
#truncate table
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus DBO_USER/DBO_PASS @db-dev TRUNCATE TABLE $tbl;

#import subset
   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/imp DBO_USER/DBO_PASS FILE=$DATADIR/$tbl.exp FULL=YES IGNORE = YES

done < cat ${TBL_HIST_LIST}
/
!
end
done

The script hangs after printing "start of new archive history.ksh". When I press enter i get:
shift_date.ksh[83]: -: more tokens expected
tbl
then the program just hangs there until i escape it...
test1.ksh[44]: cat: cannot open

you really need to read up on ksh and its syntax.
I really hoped you'd read my previous post as I don't see the changes in your new version.

I really don't want want to debug the whole thing, but here's another try:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
set -x
..............
..............
while read $tbl days
do
   ${days=30}
   # how many arguments does 'shift_date.ksh' take - 1 or 2?
   # let's assume it's 1 - substructing 30 from today's date - don't
   # quite understand why.
   DELDATE=$(shift_date.ksh "$(( ${TODAY} - ${days:=30}" )) )
   ......................
   ......................
done < "${TBL_HIST_LIST}"

what are these trailing lines?
Code:
/
!
end
done

have fun

sorry about that...i have never done any real scripts in unix, and this is my first coding assignment at my internship...basically the code is supposed to read a list file, which is structured table_name number_days_ago. If there is no number_days_ago specified, the code is supposed to default the value to 30. as the code reads through the file, it is supposed to find the date from number_days_ago(i.e lets say the number was 30, shift_date is supposed to find the date 30days ago from today - 6-01-05). then the query is supposed to save data between 6-01-05 and today.

I've been reading through three different unix books, and the end result is just me ending up being confusedSmilie, so my apologies if this code looks like it makes no sense.

Thanks for your help vgersh!

btw, those trailing lines were from the original script, i wasnt sure if i still needed them or not...
