Question sed: command garbled error

Hi all,

Suppose that I want to update the db.password entry in the below properties file,
Code:
db.username=admin
db.password=qhKkBno2U5GEq5k/dnmGPA== //I want this line to be replaced by: "db.password=abc/123/"
db.host=server
db.port=22
db.sid=database

However when I was running the below sed command the "command garbled error" was thrown?
Code:
ENTRY="db.password"
NEW_PASSWD="abc/123/"
sed '/^\('"$ENTRY"'\).*/s//\1'"=$NEW_PASSWD"'/' $DIR/properties > $DIR/temp
mv $DIR/temp $DIR/properties

Could anyone please tell me why and how to solve this problem??

Thanks,

try this

Code:

sed "s:\($ENTRY\)=\(.*\):\1=$NEW:"

That's because the replacement string contains slashes (/) and this is affecting the syntax of the substitute command.

Try:
Code:
sed '/^\('"$ENTRY"'\).*/s||\1'"=$NEW_PASSWD"'|' $DIR/properties > $DIR/temp
