Hi all

I have a file that I tail to keep an eye on certain events generated in the system. This file is cleared once a day to remove entries of the previous day. The problem is once the cleanup executes, the tail command seems to hang and does not provide the entries that are added to the file after the cleanup process.

My understanding.

You must be issuing a tail -f file which keeps updating itself. Once your cleanup executes, it removes the file. Since the tail process is not stopped/removed, the next time the file comes in, tail does not link with the newly created file. It is still linked with the file which was removed and hence tail is in a confused state. No file to operate on..and the tail command still active --> tail hangs.

In your cleanup command, kill the tail process , then remove the file, and then start tail over again. If the file is not there, do a touch file and then a tail-f file.

I donot delete the file, I merely grep -v {date} file

The tail runs on another screen and as such I cannot restarted from a script. Any ideas ?
