You use the "fi" token which is a shell script thing and doesn't exist in awk.

awk '/^\// {if($3-$2>m){m=$3-$2;p=$1}} END {print p}'

fi is not an awk keyword. In your code it is an uninitialized variable. Subtraction has higher precedence than string concatenation. The result of the subtraction is converted to a string when it is concatenated with the empty string in fi. max is now a string value. The next time it is compared using >, the comparison is done lexicographically, not numerically.

To output the /dev/sda3 and not the maximum size, on all the solutions when you change the value of max just add something like dv=$1. Then at the END print dv.
