I have the code below as

awk -F\| -vt=`date +%m%d%y%H%M%S%s` '$1=="ST",$1=="SE"{if($1=="ST"){close(f);f="214_edifile_"t"" ++i} ; $1=$1; print>f}' OFS=\| <filename>

This script replaces some characters and extracts the records starting from ST to SE and writes that in a seperate file. It works fine for smaller file, but when trying input file of bigger size the script is giving only partial output.

Can you tell me what could be the reason, is there any size limit of input file in UNIX OS please suggest to resolve.

The first line is using the same file as input and output. This lead to undefined behavior. Just use a different file as output and process that later one with awk.

You could probably take out the $1=$1 since the input and output field separators are the same.

I have one more clarification, with the above commands I am getting the desired result. But at the end of last line in each file generated I get a extra space. When viewing the file in vi editor I dont see the space, but can see it in textpad when ftp'ng to windows machine.

I am not sure how this space is there, and is there a way to remove that.
