array in awk

Hi, Can someone help me ...

I have file that contain fields, e.g

Filename start end
top1.dat 10 15
top2.dat 3 5
top3.dat 0 8
top4.dat 9 12
...

I want to extract range of lines determined by start and end fields for each file in the Filename field.

I am trying to put all of them in array and trying using sed -n '$start[0],$end[0]p' $Filename[0] which means I have to make an array for each of the field.

Is there any better solution? I am not really good using awk, Can you help me with this problem.

Thanks a lot,

Ivan

How about more complex problem ...

The problem above is actually come from more complex problem that I am trying to solve. And please I can't figure it out ...

Say I have main file and three reference files.
The main file contain :

top1.dat A.tmp
top1.dat C.tmp
top1.dat B.tmp
top1.dat A.tmp
top2.dat B.tmp
top2.dat C.tmp
...

The are three reference files which are A.tmp, B.tmp, C.tmp, each of them contain something like:

A.tmp contains:
sys.dat 1 3
ins.dat 4 5
mns.dat 6 9
bat.dat 10 13
...

B.tmp contains:
ins.dat 1 3
mns.dat 1 5
sys.dat 4 5
bat.dat 1 8
...

I want to make file top1.dat which contain files with particular lines specified in A.tmp followed by C.tmp, B.tmp, until no occurance of top1.dat again in the first field.

Thanks a lot ...

Try...
Code:
awk '{
     outfile = $1
     refile = $2
     while ((getline < refile) > 0) {
        count = 0
        infile = $1
        start = $2
        end = $3
        while ((getline < infile) > 0) {
           ++count
           if (count >= start && count <= end) {
              print $0 > outfile
           }
        }
        close(infile)
     }
     close(refile)
  }' mainfile

You can try this easily with,

#!/bin/sh

while read newfile reffile;
do

> ${newfile}

while read sfile start end
do

if [[ -f ${sfile} ]]
then
sed -n "${start},${end}" ${sfile} >> ${newfile}
fi
done < ${reffile}

done < main.file

hth.
