Put double quotes around numbers
Hi, consider a file which has data such as

Code:
"random text",912345,"54","finish"
"random text",9991236745,"9954","finish"

I want to replace the numbers that don't have double quotes around them with ones that do; so the output should be

Code:
"random text","912345","54","finish"
"random text","9991236745","9954","finish"

how can I do it?

Not the cleanest way, but it's simple:

Code:
$ cat test 
"random text",912345,"54","finish"
"random text",9991236745,"9954","finish"

$ cat test | sed -e 's/,[^"]/,"/g' -e 's/[^"]\,/"\,/g'
"random text","1234","54","finish"
"random text","99123674","9954","finish"

Thanks Vryali, but as sometimes happens I discovered an answer whilst waiting for a reply... this also works:

sed 's/,\([0-9][0-9]*\),/,"\1",/g'

Unfortunately, it's also incorrect. Take a close at your output. You're clobbering digits with quotes.

Hi,

You can also use the awk and sub command to achieve this.

Code:
$ cat testfile
"random text",912345,"54","finish"

Code:
$ awk -F, '{sub($2,"\""$2"\""); print}' testfile
"random text","912345","54","finish"
