wow.. this is really awesome !! good stuff spynappels!

---------- Post updated at 12:29 PM ---------- Previous update was at 12:20 PM ----------

one question though , why is the output of $var treated as variable as in "@" ?

from man pages:
Code:
%s     seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC

so i would imagine this value to be a constant . Please advise

Thanks

Moderator's Comments:
Mod Comment It's a variable. The current value is displayed as UNIX Time at the top of this page

Code:
#In MM/DD/YY format :
TODAY=$(perl -e '@now=localtime; printf "%02d/%02d/%02d\n", $now[4]+1,$now[3],($now[5]+1900)%100')
YESTERDAY=$(perl -e '@now=localtime(time - 86400); printf "%02d%02d%02d\n", $now[4]+1,$now[3],($now[5]+1900)%100')

Code:
#In YYYYMMDD format :
TODAY=$(perl -e '@now=localtime; printf "%04d%02d%02d\n", $now[5]+1900, $now[4]+1, $now[3];')
YESTERDAY=$(perl -e '@now=localtime(time - 86400); printf "%04d%02d%02d\n", $now[5]+1900, $now[4]+1, $now[3];')

Code:
#!/bin/bash

# -- calculate time using GMT --
Uday=`TZ=GMT date +%d` Uhr=`TZ=GMT date +%H` Lday=`date +%d` Lhr=`date +%H`

if [ $Lday = $Uday ]; then
Offset=`expr $Uhr - $Lhr` else Offset=`expr $Uhr + 24 - $Lhr` fi

Diff=`expr 24 + $Offset`
echo -n "yesterday was " TZ=GMT+$Diff date +%Y-%m-%d

Diff=`expr 24 - $Offset`
echo -n "tomorrow will be " TZ=GMT-$Diff date +%Y-%m-%d

The expression
Code:
date -d @<seconds-since-epoch>

converts the seconds-since-epoch value to human readable date.
In the Bash shell its not a variable.Smilie

.. and just for completeness.
Code:
86400 = 24 * 60 * 60

i.e. The number of seconds in a day.
