Question Help with ls command

Hi!

ls -l displays longlisting of files which includes the date, filename, permissions, size of the file and so on. Suppose i'd like to the see the files created on a particular date, how can i do that using ls command?
Any suggestions?

Not sure if there any aditional types of tools or filesystems that do store this, but jfs, jfs2, ext2, ext3 and I guess a lot of other filesystems do not store the creation time in the i-node.

Please post what Operating System and version you are using and what Shell you prefer.
The output format from the ls -l command varies (particularly the date). Please post a basic sample (blotting anything confidential with X's).
The date in a ls -l is by default the file last updated date (not the file creation date). In fact, most Operating Systems do not record the file creation date.

When you run ls - l, date is the first column. How can i find files based on the date in ls?

---------- Post updated at 05:39 AM ---------- Previous update was at 05:37 AM ----------

I'm using bash shell. Im currently working on a testing process. The files are stored in my linux server and there are plenty of files. so when i run ls command, it takes a lot of time for me to find a file that was created on the particular date. So is there any way to make this process easier where either the date is in asc order or we can find the files based on the date using find command?

Bug try this.....

Code:
ls -l | awk ' { if (( $6 == "Jun" ) && ( $7 == 15 )) print ;}'

Code:
#Sort by date (most recently modified last).
ls -ltr

#Sort my date (most recently modified first)
ls -lt

Note that the date is the "last modified" date. Two more timestamps are available but they are rarely of any use for this purpose.

Please post a sample of your ls -l format and your O/S version before we consider how to find files with today's "last modified" date.

find takes an optional mtime parameter, as mthyl has mentioned, this is the last modification time, not the creation time, however it's what ls reports as well. man find
