Need help to extract a string delimited by any special character

if you do not know your data delimiters
determine the element delimiter (read the fourth character of the file) and assign it to a variable and pass the variable to the awk statement posted in the earlier posts to substitute for your delimiter. This way you dont need to be concerned about the delimiters in the inbound data.

I have tried using /usr/bin/awk ........ , it did not worked.

Now the awk solution is working.

I am using EDI data. I have made few changes according to my requirements to the sed command given bakunin.

I use Gentran Software to deal with EDI data.

If you are using Gentran on UNIX, there are several utilities provided by Sterling Commerce to perform such tasks like "edifrmat" and "atext" which can do more than what you might require.
