@methyl: grep -o is GNU grep only I think... UUOC? Smilie OK I see you posted the tr as well, strange, when I posted I am sure there was only the fold command, did you post that later? Perhaps I replied to an old unrefreshed page?

Both lines were cut/paste from tested code. I don't recall a significant edit. But I do tend to re-edit posts umpteen times and may have posted an incomplete post.
I prefer to feed a simple pipeline with cat mainly because the Shell read is so slow on my computers in comparison to cat when feeding data to a pipeline.

You can find -o on at least all the major open source grep implementations (*BSD, GNU, and Busybox).
