a question on grep

hi, I used grep "total packets" to filter a file and get the following results, what I want is to get the lines with only one "total packets", are there any methods? thanks!

Code:
    total packets: 131
total packets: 55 total packets: 76
    total packets: 127
total packets: 55 total packets: 72
    total packets: 152
total packets: 68 total packets: 84
    total packets: 9
total packets: 5 total packets: 4
    total packets: 9
total packets: 5 total packets: 4
    total packets: 41
total packets: 22 total packets: 19
    total packets: 130
total packets: 35 total packets: 95
    total packets: 84
total packets: 31 total packets: 53
    total packets: 9
total packets: 5 total packets: 4
    total packets: 10
total packets: 6 total packets: 4

seems like those lines with only one "total packets" starts from the beginning of the line, and there are no space.. In that case you could use ^ for beginning of the line

Code:
grep '^total packets' file

If you mean total packets: 1

Try..

Code:
grep "total packets: 1$" file

---------- Post updated at 15:08 ---------- Previous update was at 15:01 ----------

If those might be on multiple lines.

Code:
grep -E "total packets:[[:blank:]]+1[[:blank:]]+" file

awk

Hi,

Try this one,

Code:
awk '/total packets/{t=$0;c=gsub(/total packets/,"",t);if(c==1)print;}' file

Use this code instead of grep.

Cheers,
