Delete Lines : after pattern1 and between pattern2 and pattern3 using awk/sed/perl

Hi

I need to delete lines from a file which are after pattern1 and between pattern 2 and patter3, as below:

aaaaaaaa
bbbbbbbb
pattern1
cdededed
ddededed
pattern2
fefefefe <-----Delete this line
efefefef <-----Delete this line
pattern3
adsffdsd
huaserew

Please can you suggest how this can be done using awk or sed or in perl.

Thank you.

What have you tried?

It should be helpful if you post your script (within code brackets) and mention the line you get the error.

Hi

I tried this :

Code:
(awk '/pattern1/{/^pattern2/,/^pattern3/{next}1}'try > try2 )

The error I got was :
Code:
awk: cmd. line:1: /pattern1/{/^pattern2/,/^pattern3/{next}1}try
awk: cmd. line:1: ^ parse error

Deleting between two patterns was something I could mange. But in this case this should be done only after pattern1 has been found, which I could not do correctly.

One way:
Code:
awk '/pattern1/{f=1} f && /pattern2/{c=1; print} c && /pattern3/{c=0} !c' file

Hi Franklin,

Thanks a lot !

It almost worked. Smilie
Except that some additional lines are deleted.

This is because pattern2 and pattern3 are occurring more than once in the file.
Pattern1 has a single occurrence. e.g. as below :

aaaaaaaa
bbbbbbbb
pattern1
cdededed
ddededed
pattern2
fefefefe <-----Delete this line
efefefef <-----Delete this line
pattern3
adsffdsd
huaserew
pattern2
asdsaga <----Not to be deleted
ashksds <----Not to be deleted
pattern3
asdsasd
rertertrr

Should have posted the above at the start, which would have given you the complete information.Smilie

Code:
awk '/pattern1/{f=1} f && /pattern2/{c=1; print} c && /pattern3/{c=0; f=0} !c' file
