Shell Programming and Scripting

Hey all I'm a "newbee" when it comes to unix, linux etc. What I'm trying to do here is create a script that will keep running, but will stop at 12:00am and restart at 12:01am automatically. What is happening here is our pix firewall is setup to send it's log files to our Sun OS 5.6 box. I've created a script to view these logs = " tail -f /var/log/pixfirewall | /home/netadmin/log_script ". So to start my script i punch in ./main_script. How can I make it automatically stop at 12am and restart at 12:01am so I dont have to restart it manually every morning.

I think that if you add a function that will check the time and if the time is 12AM have the script sleep for 1 min (ie sleep 1m ). Good luck

You can make script tht will run at 12:00 and see if ur script is running kill the script using kill -9 <process-id>.And wait for one minute and at 12:00 one it executes ur main_scirpt.

To know the process if use

ps -ef | grep -i <ur_script_name>

if you want the script to actually stop or die, have the script check the time and exit at 12:00 AM. then have cron just start it at 12:01 AM ... rishi's suggestion will also work but i prefer to have my scripts exit off rather than be killed ...

if you just want the script to suspend, larryase's suggestion should work fine ...
