How to test for the ssh exit status in script?
Hello;

I regularly run monitoring scripts over ssh to monitoring scripts
But whenever a server is hung or in maintenance mode, my script hangs..

Are there anyways to trap exit status and be on my way ??
Looked at the ssh manpage and all I can see is a "-q" option for quiet mode ..

Thank you for any ideas

Do you mean your script tries to start ssh, and it takes an incredible amount of time for that attempt to timeout?

It's not available as an ssh open, but an ssh_config option see man 5 ssh_config. You can still change on command-line with -o.

ssh -o ConnectTimeout=3 user@host ...

edit: more on exit status.

Also from ssh manual: "ssh exits with the exit status of the remote command or with 255 if an error occurred. "

So one could use [ $? -eq 255 ] to test for that in sh. maybe (( $? == 255 )) in bash. I just tested

something broke.

Test with non-zero status does not exit shell

Hi there, I'm very used to use set -e to break my scripts if any command exits with a non-zero status. As a policy, I'm willingly expecting echo hello | grep a to break the script.
