Printing characters at specific position in line
Hi,

I am trying to get an output like :

Code:
+----------------------------------+ ----------- + 
+    some variable substitution         +  some text  +

Is there a way I can specify in printf (in ksh) the particular position I want to print a character, and also repeat a character from specified position:

eg . at position 1 - print "+"
from position 2- 32 print "-"
at position 33 print "$variable"
at position 64 print "+" and so on..

Appreciate your help.

printf has positional parameters - you can just write for example:

printf "%-10s%5s\n" one two
one              two

- just aligns it to the left on a column that is 10 characters broad and just 5 for the second column aligns it to the right side of the 5 characters broad column.

To repeat something you might need a loop or some type of iteration to have the characters be printed for you n-times. The position can be specified though like described above.
