Copying files to a directory

Hi,
I am newbie to unix scripting, need a help in the doubt i have. It is " when files are copied to a directory using cp command, they are arranged by default according to the file name, is there anyway where the files that are copied be arranged with respect to their size, with using the sort command or ls command.

reason is the directory which has the files is given as an argument to a script with determines the avg of the file size and cut-off at a particular avg value selecting those files that qualify for that particular avg. value.

pl help.

Regards
Pundalik

Do you want to know how to generate a list of files less than your average size, or how to copy that list of files? Or both?

ls has many different sorting options, but I'm not sure how that will help with your issue.

hey Carlo,
well, i already have a repository of files, i am sorting them into different folders wrt to extension type, and then these classified folders are supplied as an argument.
so the script just " stat" the file calculates the average and compare's it with the defined avg value, one at a time, so here i observed the file is getting picked acording to the file name. due to which if the first file itself is larger than the defined avg, then this program goes for a toss, even if the folder having smaller size file listed below.

tried the ls, but did not help..

Use find.

e.g.
Code:
find /tmp -size +1M

Finds files in /tmp (and sub-directories) which are larger than 1 Mb.

here if you notice, the file are arranged according to the name, ( refering the output of ls command ) ( ls -l is just used as reference to point out my query)

so here i need the files to be arranged in terms of size and not in terms of name, when i run the fin d command.

The idea is that you find only the files you're going to copy - so the order doesn't matter.
