I have a data file in the format of

I want to be able to calculate the following -
COLUMN1+((LINENUMBER-1)/365)

The output needs to preserve the 2nd column -

What is the best way to do this? I am somewhat familiar with awk.

I don't understand your example output, it doesn't look like it has anything to do with the input or the formula you gave.

You can assign columns, not just read from them, which lets you change column 1 without changing the line.

By column I am referring to 1234. Not sure if that answers your question or not?

To clarify better, the first column is flexible. So 1234 is not necessarily always the same.

Thanks it works like you said up until the last set up to a certain point.

For some reason the first column is +1 more than it should be.

For instance

2006 54

returns

2007.2354 54

Also, when there is a decimal in the 2nd column values like

2006 41.5

The value return is

2007.2241.5 41.5
