Text replace by position instead of reg expr.

Can we replace the contents the of the rows of file, from one position to another position by mentioning, some start position & the width?

With sed, you can specify a starting address and stoping address so that sed commands will only be applied within the bounds of the address.

The form of a sed command is as follows:

[address[,address]]function[arguments]

Can we have column wise, instead of row wise?

A simple way would be to use AWK to just reprint the columns. For example, if you have some textfile:

column1 column2
column1 column2
column1 column2

$ awk '{ print $2 " " $1 }' textfile

column2 column1
column2 column1
column2 column1

Cheers,
