Error awk: 0602-592 cannot contain a newline character

Hi guys,

I'am new at this forum as well as with unix.

currently iam trying to create a unix script that will write certain string of words into a file depending on certain conditions apparently i am having problems in terms of writing into the file using the awk. it returns an error indicating that the source line 1 should not contain a newline.

i had also tried to view my script using the vi to find if there were special characters on it but to no avail.

it would be a big help if you could help me with this. below is my code snippet.

Code:
awk -F'|' -v logfName=`echo "${logFileName}"` -v tblName=`echo "${paramTblName}"` -v \
startTime="${startTimeStamp}" -v endTime="${endTimeStamp}" -v rows=`echo "${processedRows}"` '{
if ($0 == " ")
{
 print "logfName|tblName|startTime|endTime|rows"
}
else
{
	if ($1 == logfName && $2 == tblName && $3 == startTime)
	print "logfName|tblName|startTime|endTime|$4 + rows"
	else
	print "logfName|tblName|startTime|endTime|rows"
}
}' ${fileOut}

any comment/suggestions are very much appreciated.

thanks,
ivan
