thanks..,
but since this is going to be in a script which dynamically reads the filename changes the filename that has to be read by another program, i would like to do it with sed or awk.

so far, I could get to do it in two parts.

echo "filename3-10-2005.xls" | awk -F. '{ print $(NF-1) }' | sed 's/[0-9]-.*//' to get the filename part.
echo "filename3-10-2005.xls" | awk -F. '{ print $(NF-1) }' | sed 's/[A-Z]*//' to get the 3-10-2005 part.

now i need to change 3-10-2005 to 20050310 and join it with the filename.

since this is tedious, i am wondering if there is any easier way to do it...

How about

file1=filename3-10-2005.xls
file2=`echo $file1|sed 's/\(.*\)-\(.*\)-\(.*\).xls/\1\2\3\.xls/g'`
mv file1 file2

i think it is the same filename again....no difference at all....

there are better ways of doing this but I'm too tired to think about them now:
Code:
Assuming ksh or bash for the script

file1=filename3-10-2005.xls
file2=$(echo $file1 | sed -e 's/\([0-9]*\)-\([0-9]*\)-\([0-9]*\)/\3-\2-\1/g' -e 's/-\([0-9]\)\([.-]\)/0\1\2/g' -e 's/-//g')
mv ${file1} ${file2}

$ echo $file1
filename3-10-2005.xls

$ file2=`echo $file1 | sed -e 's/\([0-9]*\)-\([0-9]*\)-\([0-9]*\)/\3-\2-\1/g' -e 's/-\([0-9]\)\([.-]\)/0\1\2/g' -e 's/-//g'`

$ echo $file2
filename20051003.xls

Bash or ksh...
Code:
for file in *.xls
do $(echo $file | awk 'split($0, Arr, /[^0-9]+/)==5{
      Orig = $0
      Date = sprintf("%04d%02d%02d", Arr[4], Arr[2], Arr[3])
      sub(/[0-9]?.-..-..../, Date)
      printf "mv %s %s\n", Orig, $0 }' )
done
