help for sed

Hi...

i want to replace oldstring to newstring recursively from the folders listed in a file called "listfolder.."

So i use the following script

Quote:
while read line
sed 's/$old/$new/g' $line > newline
done < listfolder
But this will not solve my issue...
each sed command creates a new file...
I want to replace in the same file..
Is there any swithces for sed to do it..

Thanks in advance

yes,...thats great..
But can we do with sed...Is there any switches for sed...for this task..

also it will be great if you can explain the usage "s/$old/$new/g\nwq!""

particularly.." g\nwq!"

thanks in advance

no, not with the 'stock' sed.

the syntax of sed and ex is virtually the same.
'g' - global replace on the same line
'\n' - argument of '/bin/echo' to output 'newLine'
'wq!' - argument of 'ex' to 'Write' the file out and 'Quit' the 'ex' session.

You can simply do with sed as,

sed -i 's/$old/$new/g' <filename>

It will do changes on the filename with out in-need of new temporary file.

not with the stock sed - at least not on Solaris.
