something wrong with variables

Hi,
I'm trying to get this simple script to work, and i don't know why it's not.

Code:
#!/bin/bash

today=$(date +"%Y%m%d")
tstamp=$(date -d "$today" "+%s")
ttal=0

cat $1 | while read each ;
do
     input=$(echo $each | cut -d " " -f4 | tr -d "{},")
     if [ $input -gt $tstamp ]; then
           vol=$(echo "scale=8; $(echo $each | cut -d " " -f2 | tr -d ",")" | bc)
           ttal=$(echo "scale=8; $ttal + $vol" | bc)
     fi
done
echo $ttal

It all works fine during the loop, the values are correct, but when i want to print the final result, I get 0.
I tried to use export ttal= ... but without success

Thanks in advance for your help!

Save it to a temp file first.
