Java what is use of -d , -a option in if condition

Below is the code i got from forum. can any one help me on this.

use of -d , -a option in if loop.
Code:
test_function()
{
     echo "converting test files in $1 to ascii"
      if [ -d $1 ] || [ -f $1 ]
     then
                            echo "sucessfully converted"
      else
                            echo "pls check the path"
      exit FAILED
     fi
}

-d ==>checks whether $1 is a directory or not
-f ==>checks whether $1 is a file or not
