I created one dummy procedure just to test the output of stored procedure as given below -

create proc testing1
as
return 1

If I execute this proc on isql prompt it gives
1> exec testing
2> go
(return status = 1)

However when I run the same Stored Procedure from script it gets
RETURN_OUTPUT1=0
always.

Try returning the values from procedure as below,

create procedure testing 
returning integer; 
return 1; 
end;

It seems that $? will let us know whether the last shell command executed successfully or not. However my requirement is to catch the return value from the Stored Procedure ran from shell script.

I believe there should be some other mechanism for this.

Yes, change the procedure accordingly and use the previous code of capturing the return value instead of $?, it should work.

You could also try moving the SQL block to a separate SQL script file and invoke the SQL script from shell.

Back to square Siva Smilie I am getting the same problem (original one) that the RETURN_OUTPUT1 is coming blank. So if I echo RETURN_OUTPUT1 it is blank.
