How do I run bash script using a cron job?

I have tried to just write the path of the script, but that didn't work.

Make sure all the commands you're using are in PATH. Cron gives you a very minimal PATH by default. This problem is so frequent it's on our FAQ. . /etc/profile may be sufficient to get you a better value for PATH.

As for the syntax of your line in crontab -e, that expects 5 fields before the actual line of shell code, describing which days/hours/minutes to be run.

To run a script every day at 1am:

0 1 * * * /path/to/script.sh

See man 5 crontab.

You could also try the line

* * * * * touch /tmp/cronworks

which should be executed every minute, creating or updating the timestamp on the /tmp/cronworks file. If it doesn't get created, something's wrong.
