That worked, these spaces are taking me places.

If is just command line as all other lines => command + arguments, between arguments must be spaces. Then it's easy to remember spaces. Also variables are expanded before doing line.
So if $itemcode value is *
1) if [ * = "*" ] ...
and
2) if [ "*" = "*" ] ...
are not same.
Case 1 commandline include * => filegeneration ...

That is the reason why always says: use variables with " ", then usually result is what expected.
In this case *, or variable is empty give problem. In many cases without " " you get problems, but with " " usually never.
