Using awk to find sum of an array
Hi

I am really new to awk and using shell script but I am wondering if its possible to find the sum of an array? I looked online but most of the things there are confusing, and when I tried it on my own it kept giving me the value of the last entry into the array for the sum.

I have an array X[] with values in it. Is there a way I can find the sum of its values simply? It just contains 5 values (4, 6, 2, 2, 7) and I need its sum.

Simple awk segment (not a complete programme)

Code:
sum = 0;
for( i = 1; i <= length( x ); i++ )
   sum += x[i];
printf( "%d\n", sum );

# 3

If the indexes aren't sequential,

Code:
sum = 0
for (i in X) sum += X[i]

perl sum 2nd field in an array
