Piping output of ls to a text file
Basically I was wondering if any of you know how to pipe the output of ls to a text file? so in my shell script one of the lines is ls but i want to pipe it into a file called directory listing.
Cheers.
I have tried ls | Directorylisting.txt
but it keeps saying " line 7: DirectoryListing.txt: command not found"

as you can tell I'm a beginner.

Have a look at the tee command.

is it not possible to do it with the | ?

tee can read from a pipe. A randomly named file cannot.

There is an example here: tee - POSIX man page.

what is exactly your goal?
get output any commands with pipe?

If you just want to redirect the output and don't actually need a pipe, it's just ls > DirectoryListing.txt.

I'm trying to pipe the output of ls because I want it to be on screen in terminal and also in DirectoryListing.txt.

What is cat?

piping output of tail running in background
