Hi boopal,

Use 'ignorecase' variable.
Code:
BEGIN { IGNORECASE = 1 }

Try grep option -i for case-insensitive matching:
Code:
grep -i -E <pattern> <file_name>

u can't use normal variable in awk...

Try this...

Code:
echo "Enter first_name:"
read f
export f
awk 'BEGIN { INGNORECASE = 1 } $2 == ENVIRON["f"] {print "name" $2,$1}' file

or
Code:
echo "Enter first_name:"
read f
grep -i $f file | awk '{print "name" $2,$1}'

you may also try this:
[ works for ksh93 ]
Code:
typeset -l a
typeset -l b
read a
cat a.dat | while read first sec junk
do
  b=${sec}
  [[ ${a} == ${b} ]] && echo "Got ya: $sec, $first"
done

In awk, this maybe works:

Code:
echo "Enter first_name:"
read f
awk -v varF="${f}" 'BEGIN { INGNORECASE = 1 } $2 == varF {print "Name: " $2,$1}' file
