extracting value from input

Hi folks. I was wondering how can one do the following (awk, sed, or grep command)...I am at a loss

I need to extract the value of a line (list of PATH) as

/abc/blah/more/blah

I want to extract /abc (regardless of length, as the next line could be /xyzfg/some/file/path

Any idea. I tried reading up on awk but the print does not work since the line is one line and just one field. I tried cut command but that did not seem to work

TIA

Thank you all for your reply. I was so close BH (I was doing f1 not f 1-2). It works nice!

Thank you all again for your time and help.
