help me out with awk command.

awk '{print (/^\// ? $1 : ${16}) }'  myfile

plz explain.

awk '{print (/^\// ? $1 : ${16}) }' myfile

First part in magenta is a regular expression as /regular expression/: match the start of a line followed by a / character.
?: is a conditional expression. If true print $1, else print ${16}

The strange thing is ${16} is not valid awk syntax, it should be $16

that means there is no difference between following commands...

I've read the thread and tried:

ls -l | awk '{FS=" "; printf( /^u/ ? "\n" $8 "\n": "" )}'

there is no output although 'ls u* -l' list files starting with 'u'.

what's wrong with my awk code?

Yes but the lines that ls -l produces do not start with 'u'
