Just one comment about most of the "greps" I see here, depending on your OS, you don't need the "... | wc -l" to count, you can use "grep -c":

cnt=`ps -ef | grep -c /usr/sbin/qdaemon`
# Adds 1 to the max number of processes because of the "grep <process>" process
maxNumProcesses=2
[ ${cnt} -gt ${maxNumProcesses} ] && mailx -s "qdaemon is loose" you@you.com

Maybe this is not the best issue to solve with "grep -c", because you need to add 1 the result, but when filtering a file, you don't need one more pipe. =o)
