Assigning fields values to different variables

Hi,

I have this code:

Code:
cat file.txt | awk -F, 'NR==1{print $6","$8","$10","$20","$21","$19}' > file.tmp
    VAR1=`cat file.tmp | cut -d "," -f1`
    VAR2=`cat file.tmp | cut -d "," -f2`
    VAR3=`cat file.tmp | cut -d "," -f3`;
    VAR4=`cat file.tmp | cut -d "," -f4`;
    VAR5=`cat file.tmp | cut -d "," -f5`;
    VAR6=`cat file.tmp | cut -d "," -f6`;

Is there a better way to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Code:
while IFS="," read V1 V2 V3 V4 V5 V6 V7
do
        echo "V1=$V1 V2=$V2 V3=$V3 V4=$V4 V5=$V5 V6=$V6 V7=$V7"
done < file1.txt

If there's more fields than read was expecting, they all get crammed into the last one, so it's useful to have an extra field to hold unexpected garbage.

Or, how about:

Code:
OLDIFS="$IFS"
while read LINE
do
        IFS=","
                set -- $LINE
        IFS="$OLDIFS"

        echo ${6} ${8} ${10} ${20} ${21} ${19}
done < file1.txt

This will overwrite your $1,$2,... parameters.
