Compare files questions

Hello,
I have two files A and B. File A had a million records with each record been 10-digit number. File B had 400,000 records with each record been 10-digit number. There are some common and different records. I need to print out records in A that are not in B.

Please assist. Thanks - jak

diff

Hi,
Try this untested one,
Code:
diff -w file1 file2 | grep '<'

Cheers,
Ranga:-)

If you sort the files, you can simply feed them into diff which will produce lines like > text for things in file1, < for things in file2.

In other words, what ranga posted 1 minute faster than me. Smilie But the input files must be in sorted order.

You can do this:

Code:

cat A|sort > tmpA
cat B|sort > tmpB
diff tmpA tmpB|grep "<"

You can redirect the last line to an output file too, if required.

That is a useless use of cat.

Code:
sort < A > tmpA
sort < B > tmpB

Code:
awk 'NR==FNR{a[$1];next} !($1 in a)' fileB fileA
