awk syntax error
Hi All,

I wrote a simple script.sh program

Code:
for i in seq (22)
do awk '$1==${i}' file1.txt|awk '{print $2}'> file${i}_study.txt
done

and then run it
Code:
%bash
%chmod +x script.sh
% ./script.sh

Give me error

Code:
awk: $1==${i}
awk:   ^ syntax error

Do you have any idea why does it happen?

Which shell and operating system are you using?

i am using bash. Anyways, I figured it out. It has to be

Code:
for i in 1 2 3 4 5
do 
awk '$1==${i}' file1.txt|awk '{print $2}'> file${i}_study.txt
done

That's not it either. ${i} is not substituted inside single quotes, at all, ever.

You want awk -v VAR="value" 'VAR == $1'

You can do it without running awk twice for every file:

Code:
awk -v VAR=3 '$1 == VAR { print $2 }'

In fact, you can do so running awk only once for n output files, no shell loop required:

Code:
awk '{ print $2 > "file" $1 "_study.txt" }' < datafile
