NR is an awk variable. You can't put it in head.

A is an array I used in awk. I could have called it Z or LINES. head doesn't have that either.

awk is its own little self-contained language.

Your datafiles contain garbage which corrupt their output no matter what tools you use them with, you'll have to correct them first.
