Question perl: hashes, whiles, and last

hello everyone,

i am creating 2 hashes from 2 different files, then looking for the value of one in the value of the other to make a new file. for example:

file1: DENV => Denver
file2: H224-0A-12 => DENVER

if Denver is found in DENVER (case insensitive), a new hash now contains H224-0A-12 => DENV.

although this example is straightfowrd, the values can also partially match, for example, Miami into MIAMI/SOUTH FLORIDA.

what i've stated so far is not a problem; in fact, i can get this to work. however, i am trying to use last; within my while loop to break out of it if a state has already been found, that is, if Denver is found in DENVER, don't look for Denver in TAMPA, or CHICAGO, or NEW YORK, and so on...

if i leave out the last statement i get a hash with 111 entries, if i use last i get 73; i cannot figure out why. where am i going wrong? the code is below:

while(my($k,$v)=each(%directories)) {
while(my($k2,$v2)=each(%ids)) {
if($v =~ /$v2/i) {
$final{$k} = $k2;
# this is where last; would be.
}
}
}

thank you.

NAME
xzcmp, xzdiff, lzcmp, lzdiff - compare compressed files SYNOPSIS
xzcmp [cmp_options] file1 [file2] xzdiff [diff_options] file1 [file2] lzcmp [cmp_options] file1 [file2] lzdiff [diff_options] file1 [file2] DESCRIPTION
xzcmp and xzdiff invoke cmp(1) or diff(1) on files compressed with xz(1), lzma(1), gzip(1), bzip2(1), or lzop(1). All options specified are passed directly to cmp(1) or diff(1). If only one file is specified, then the files compared are file1 (which must have a suffix of a supported compression format) and file1 from which the compression format suffix has been stripped. If two files are specified, then they are uncompressed if necessary and fed to cmp(1) or diff(1). The exit status from cmp(1) or diff(1) is preserved. The names lzcmp and lzdiff are provided for backward compatibility with LZMA Utils. SEE ALSO
cmp(1), diff(1), xz(1), gzip(1), bzip2(1), lzop(1), zdiff(1) BUGS
Messages from the cmp(1) or diff(1) programs refer to temporary filenames instead of those specified. Tukaani 2011-03-19 XZDIFF(1)
