Shell Programming and Scripting

Hi all, I have the following business requirement, and not sure how to proceed...

I have two separate UNIX servers. I will have a script running on one of them that will connect to the other via FTP. This FTP script will grab (mget) files, and then delete those files from the remote server.
The issue is that when the script gets around to deleting the files, I have the slight possibility of deleting files I haven't yet grabbed, since new files are constantly being written out to the remote server.
The only solution I've come up with so far is to do an initial ftp session to do a listing of the directory and make a temp dataset. Then have the script loop through that data set, having an ftp session for each entry that will grab and then delete that file.

Two questions:
1. Is this the best solution?
2. If yes, can someone please provide a code example? I'm not experienced in sed, etc. I know if I were just working on one server, I would jut use a function in my script, sending a listing into the function like with ls -p....

The decision is yours which way you wanted to do it.
Binary name and machine name you can pass to the script.

Here is the part of the script for a single binary, which
can give you starting point.

man ftp .. to setup .netrc file and other things.
