KSH – Shell subtraction

Hello

I am using a ksh shell on solaris 9.

I am looking for a way to subtract two files and get a number

The first file contains only lines
Code:
  LINE_A
  LINE_B
  LINE_C

The second file contain one number, the number of the line
Example
Code:
  1

So the idea is to substract the number of the line in the first file with the number inside the second file :

Code:
  Number_1=$(cat first_file | wc –l)
  Number_2=$(cat second_file)
  Result=(number_1 – number_2)
  Echo « $Result »

I have found this post, and the reply from "cfajohnson" works fine, but I am not sure it's the best way on KSH.

You may start with something like this and report back if it doesn't work:

Code:
% head file[12]
==> file1 <==
  LINE_A
  LINE_B
  LINE_C

==> file2 <==
 1

%
% ksh -c 'print $(( $( wc -l < file1 ) - $( < file2 ) ))'
2
