based on what you are splitting?

every four digits?

Code:

echo "85743975945738" | awk '{ a=substr($0,1,4);b=substr($0,5,4); c=substr($0,9);print a"-"b"-"c}'

I believe deff there wil be a better way.

There is no delimiter in it. I should split like 4digits-4-digits-rest of the numbers..
