Your question is not very clear.

You have a heterogenous network - windows & linux. Yes?

What is you want to do exactly? XP or Windows 7?
What linux are you running?

Do you have all the computers concerned in a list (or in /etc/hosts) which contains "Computer Name" and "IP Address"?
Do you have full administrative access to all computers concerned?
For a Windows XP computer, how do you define that a computer is "unoccupied"?
For a Linux computer, how do you define that a computer is "unoccupied"?
