sed or ????
I have a big text file that has specific paragraph titles always in the same order.

If I wanted to delete all text after a certain title would I want to use sed or another command? The paragraph titles are "unique" in the way that they are not located anywhere else in the file.

Well, it's all very dependent on your exact needs and the exact nature of the file, but if I had a file something like...

Code:
My first title
a
b
c
d
e
My second title
f
g
h
i
j
My third title
k
l
m
n
o

And wanted to delete everything after the third title (inclusive), i'd use sed -
Code:
sed '/My third title/,$d' sedfile

If you want any more information - you need to be a bit more specific and maybe post a sample of the file.

Sorry about it not being specific enough but you hit it right on the head.

The only part I could not figure out was the $d. So I gather that the $ is the partt that mean from here to the end of the file?

also similar to ...

 a=`grep -n  'my second title' sedfile | cut -d":" -f 1`
 echo $a
 sed "$a,$ d" file1
